The Metropolitan Police Authority has 23 members who scrutinise and support the work of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).

Following the mayoral and London Assembly elections, the membership of the MPA has changed and new Assembly members have been appointed.

The Police and Justice Act 2006 introduced changes to the composition of all police authorities including the MPA. From 1 October, current MPA independent and magistrate member positions will be replaced by ten independent member posts, for which the Authority is now recruiting.

Also from 1 October the mayor will sit as chair of the Authority and will appoint the deputy chair/s.

At the MPA AGM on Thursday 29 May Len Duvall was re-elected unopposed as chair of the Authority. Cindy Butts and Reshard Auladin were reappointed as deputy chairs, while Kit Malthouse was appointed first deputy chair to prepare the way for the new administration on 1 October.

Toby Harris has been reappointed as an independent member by the Home Secretary to represent her interest in the MPS's national and international functions.

Notes to Editors

The position of first deputy is a new appointment for the Authority. Its creation is a recognition that mayoral involvement in chairing the MPA will inevitably require some changes to the way the Authority conducts its business. As he is also the first deputy mayor for policing, Kit Malthouse is well placed to contribute to this process and to provide continuity once the mayor has joined the MPA as its chair from 1 October 2008.

In summary, the role of first deputy chair will include:

  • deputising for the chair as required
  • sharing some of the chair's responsibilities for representing the MPA on pan-London and national bodies
  • portfolio lead for the Metropolitan Police Service improvement programme
  • leading the budget scrutiny of business group budgets
  • working with the chair and other members to ensure a smooth transition to new working processes
